The vertical distance (height) from sea level to a point on Earth’s surface.
elevation
Distance below sea level of a point on Earth’s surface.
depth
The average height of the surface of the oceans; it is used as a reference point for the measurement of elevation and depth.
sea level
A line on a topographic map that connects the positions of all points of equal value, for example, all points at the same elevation.
contour line
p A map that uses color to show changes in the elevation and depth of Earth’s surface.
